Concrete Is a Foundation, Not a Finish: Why I Steer Clients Away From It

When a client asks for a concrete patio or a poured concrete path, I don't say no. But I do ask them to hear me out first.


Concrete is one of the most useful materials in construction. I pour it under almost every paver patio, flagstone path, and retaining wall base I build. It's strong, stable, and cheap. As a foundation, it's nearly unbeatable.


As a finish surface — the thing you actually see and touch and walk on — it's almost always the wrong choice.


Here's why.




Concrete Tells You Exactly What It Is


The problem with concrete as a finish material isn't structural. It's visual. Concrete looks like concrete. It looks poured. It looks utilitarian. It carries the energy of a parking garage or a loading dock, and no amount of coloring or stamping changes that fundamental character.


Stamped concrete is the version of this I get asked about most. Clients see it at a neighbor's house or in a showroom and think it's a budget-friendly alternative to stone. Sometimes it is, short term. But stamped concrete is concrete pretending to be something else — and it doesn't age well. The color fades. The sealer peels. The pattern, which was never quite right to begin with, becomes more obviously fake as the years go on.


Real stone doesn't do that. Real stone gets better with age. It weathers, it patinas, it settles into its surroundings. In ten years, a flagstone patio looks established. In ten years, stamped concrete looks tired.




What I Use Instead


The materials I reach for most are the ones that earn their place over time.


**Flagstone** is the one I come back to constantly. Irregular Pennsylvania bluestone, Arizona sandstone, or a warm buff limestone — all of them have natural variation in color and thickness that makes them feel alive in a way concrete never does. Set in a stable base with wide joints planted with creeping thyme or silver carpet, a flagstone path looks like it grew up with the house. The imperfection is the point.


**Pavers** have their place too — particularly for driveways or large hardscape areas where you need the strength and the uniformity. Good pavers installed with proper base compaction and tight joints hold up for decades. And unlike concrete, if one breaks or shifts, you pull it up and replace it. You can't do that with a slab.


**Decomposed granite** works beautifully in the right context — a low-formality garden path, a dry creek transition area, a natural-feeling border between planting zones. It's permeable, which matters for drainage and water retention. It has a warmth and a looseness to it that reads as organic rather than constructed.


**Gravel and boulders** can do what concrete never can: they integrate with the landscape rather than sitting on top of it. A well-chosen gravel — warm in tone, sized right for the context — reads as part of the earth. Set a few large boulders nearby and you've created something that looks geologically appropriate, not installed.




The Drainage Problem


Here's something most homeowners don't think about until it's too late: concrete doesn't breathe.


A concrete slab sheds water. If it's sloped correctly, that water goes somewhere specific — usually to a drain or to the edge of the property. If it's not sloped correctly, or if the drain gets overwhelmed, you get pooling, cracking, and eventually structural issues.


Permeable alternatives — flagstone set in gravel, DG, pavers with open joints — let water filter down through the surface and back into the soil. In Southern California, where every drop of rain matters and where many properties are on grades that create real drainage challenges, that permeability is not just an environmental nicety. It's a practical advantage.




When Concrete Is the Right Call


I don't want to be dogmatic about this. There are situations where concrete is genuinely the best answer.


Retaining wall footings. Post footings for pergolas and freestanding structures. The base under a heavy paver driveway. Any application where you need mass, strength, and permanence below grade — concrete is doing its job.


And occasionally, on a very contemporary project where the architecture calls for a clean, hard, flat surface, a well-done concrete slab can be the right aesthetic choice. I've poured them and been happy with the result. But those projects are the exception, and they require real craft — proper finishing, proper expansion joints, a client who understands how to maintain it.


The default should never be concrete just because it's familiar or because it seems simpler. In most residential landscapes in Orange County, there's a better material for the surface you're actually going to see.




The Real Cost


Here's what I tell clients when they push back on cost: concrete is cheap upfront and expensive over time. The materials cost less, but a concrete slab that cracks, spalls, or settles unevenly costs real money to fix — because you can't fix part of it. You tear out the whole thing and start over.


Flagstone, pavers, DG — these materials can be repaired, adjusted, and improved in sections. They age in ways that look natural rather than ways that look broken. And they never stop looking like a considered choice.


That's the standard I hold myself to: not what looks good in the first year, but what earns its place over time. Concrete, as a finish surface, almost never makes that cut.
